Temple Run: Oz is the latest and greatest addition to the Temple Run saga.

We’ve all temporarily lost a friend or loved one to the obsession that is Temple Run. Temple Run: Oz is no different, as it feeds into our coin-collecting addictions. In this Temple Run and Wizard of Oz mashup, players will experience the familiarity of the traditional Temple Run game. While the lay of the land continually changes, players are forced to adapt as danger ensues.

As the player takes on the role of Oscar Diggs, it’s a fight to the finish line. While baboons and giant gorillas aim to thwart your efforts, the player must swiftly gallivant through the fantasy land, collecting coins along the way. For an immortality boost, players are encouraged to collect as many coins as possible for temporary immunity. Put your ultimate Temple Run skills to the test with the all-new Temple Run: Oz.

Pros

  • An eye-catching fictional world
  • Beautiful graphics
  • New mini-games

Cons

  • Gameplay can be repetetive
  • Choppy transitions between levels

Based on the popular Disney franchise, Temple Run: Oz is an action-packed mobile app that requires players to run away from dangers while collecting coins.

After releasing three previous Temple Run titles, many people believed that Imangi Studios was running out of ideas. While their games have been extremely addictive, the last two titles often felt repetitive and stale. Luckily, all of that has changed with Temple Run: Oz. Instead of following Dorothy, this adventure game follows a protagonist known as Oscar Diggs. This unusual man travels to eye-catching landscapes throughout the fictional world of Oz in search of treasure and excitement.

Those who have enjoyed some of the previous Temple Run titles will quickly be able to familiarize themselves with Temple Run: Oz. Instead of the rabid baboons that are found in the first few games, you now run from the iconic flying monkeys that were first popularized by the Oz books and movies. While you are escaping from these dangers, you must continue to collect coins to boost your health and speed.

The journey starts in a lush and beautiful forest, but players will eventually find themselves in less hospitable locations including dreary graveyards and ominous deserts. As you travel between the worlds, you first notice a small sign before a loading bar appears. Even though this update is rather innocuous, it could potentially be frustrating for new players who must use all of their skills to stay ahead of the flying monkeys.

Just as with the previous Temple Run games, you must collect coins to boost your stats and buy power-ups. In addition to boosting your points, you can also use your power-ups to hop on Oz’s hot air balloon. Once inside the balloon, you can steer it through long strings of coins for even more rewards. This mini-game is not groundbreaking, but it definitely changes the pace of the game for a short period of time.

The other major update to this series is the graphics. Unlike the stale scenery from the first three titles, Temple Run: Oz has beautiful designs throughout all of the stages. In addition to a textured pathway, you will also experience 3D figures moving around in the distance. This simple upgrade adds quite a bit of depth to the game, and it makes it one of the most eye-catching titles to have ever come from Imangi Studios.

These games might not be for everyone, but anyone who has enjoyed the previous Temple Run titles will find it difficult to find any faults with Temple Run: Oz. The new mini-games and improved graphics make it feel like an update to a familiar and fun franchise.
